Awash with history of the town's herring industry, this hostel also serves as a cafe and museum to a failed fishery. There's nary a fish in sight though as the place has been comprehensively refitted as a backpacker den. With ten bunk beds, this is small scale hostel with showers and a basic kitchen, though you'll have to bring your own sleeping bag or pay 3.00 extra for bedding. It's clean no-frills accommodation with three bunk rooms to choose from. It's handy for the ferry, which is literally five minutes away. Most of your fellow guests will be outdoor types, who strap on the hiking boots early in the morning so you won't need an alarm clock. The cafe is one of Stronsay's relatively better eating options serving snacks all day and the museum is surprisingly fascinating as it retraces the boom days of the 'silver darlings' that were once a crucial part of the island's economy.
