Looming over the Larvotto beachfront to the west of downtown Monte Carlo, the high-rise Meridien aims to cater for all tastes: it's a residential tower block, designer den, business centre and beach hotel all rolled into one.

With so many rooms on offer (403 at the last count), the Meridien's major selling point is that you can usually find space here even when the rest of town is booked to bursting. Pick of the bedrooms are the curvy corner suites in the glass towers on either side of the building, with funky features such as freestanding baths, stripey bedspreads, glossy wood floors and retro-style furniture. The boxy, traditionally decorated rooms in the older part of the hotel are less impressive, but most come with their own private balcony and flat-screen TV. Extra features include a top-notch business centre (the Sea Club), as well as a trio of swimming pools, a 24-hour restaurant and a private beach. Don't even think about getting one of the so-called 'city view' rooms - it's beachfront or nothing here, baby.
