This Monte Carlo classic was comprehensively refurbished in 2004 by the world-famous Parisian designer Jacques Garcia, and has since reclaimed its rightful place as one of the principality's plushest hotels. It's stuffy, snooty and seriously expensive, but if you're looking to live life en luxe, then the Metropole is a tough act to top.

This is definitely one hotel where you'll need to pack your dinner jacket (even the buffet breakfast is silver service, for heaven's sake). The palatially posh public areas - including a chic cocktail bar, an astonishingly upmarket gourmet restaurant and a stately antique-filled lounge that would put most aristocratic châteaux to shame - are among the most beautiful anywhere in Monaco. Most (but not all) of the 150-odd rooms and suites have been overhauled in lavish fashion, combining classic Monte Carlo style (thickly-quilted beds, deep armchairs, rich colour schemes) - with all the high-tech mod-cons you could wish for (king-sized work desk, fax lines, dual phone line, high speed net access). Varnished wood panelling, silky-smooth marble tiles and smart his-and-hers sinks distinguish the top-notch bathrooms.
