In addition to a heaping fish plate, you'll also get some lip from the waiter at Los Porteños (tel: 2252 511; Valdivia 169), but sass is considered part of its charm. This scruffy old-fashioned marisquería (seafood restaurant) is a revered local institution.

How to get there

• Garivalpo is located in the street Garibaldi, 191, Valparaiso, at the foothills of the hill 'La Cruz'. If you're coming with a bus from Santiago get out at the first stop in Valparaiso which is at the corner of Avenida Argentina with Avenida Colon. Then you follow the Avenida Colon towards the city center until it crosses the Avenida Francia. There you turn left and follow the Avenida Francia until Vallejos street. There you turn left, go up the hill and afterwards to the right into Garibaldi street. There are bus stops, taxis colectivos and other public transportation nearby.
• From the International Airport in Santiago take the Centropuerto bus to the metro station Pajaritos (line 1). Here take any bus to Valparaiso, there are lots of bus companies offering transfers to Valparaiso every 15 minutes.
• Taxis "Colectivos": They leave in the street General Cruz, right next to the Parque Italia. Tell them to drop you off at the end of the Vallejos street, at the Garivalpo B&B.
