Address: Heweliusza jana 22 , Gdansk 80-890, Poland Show on map
This towering hotel would definitely be included in anyone's shortlist of 'ugliest buildings of Gdansk', but its neat and clean rooms and on-site facilities are reassuringly consistent for its business-class clientele.Entering the Mercure Hevelius can be a bit disorientating, as its foyer is decked out with multiple mirrors and shiny marble surfaces. Once you're past that, however, the rooms conform to a shiny international standard, with spacious tiled bathrooms. Elsewhere in the towering establishment, there are various services and facilities to take advantage of, including a restaurant, bar and in-house massage. Three floors are also equipped with wireless Internet access for those last-minute business emails. Though the building itself is a blot on the horizon, some rooms have great views over the historic buildings of the Main Town.

North of the hotel on ul Waly Piastowskie is the Roads to Freedom exhibition, depicting the turbulent 1980s events that led to the overthrow of Poland's communist regime. Its displays, well captioned in English, are a fascinating way to delve into the city's more recent history.
The hotel takes its name from Jan Heweliusz, famous 17th-century astronomer and Gdansk citizen.
