If you're one of those hip independent types who is isn't daunted by taking the public bus into town, stay here. The neighborhood is a little gritty, but represents a real, un-glossed Halifax. Sleep for cheap and meet plenty of locals.

Collect some travelling musicians, a few dread-locked hippies and a clean-cut vacationing couple or two then seat them all in a cafe with a bunch of friendly Haligonians. Give them all free-trade coffee and a cheap hearty breakfast. Hey, what do you know? You're way cooler than an ordinary tourist. Dorms hold no more than six beds and there are a few double rooms available. A punk band practices across the street from time to time but they usually pack up by 23:00. You'll end up staying up later than that anyway if you cook in the busy communal kitchen, where you'll meet all sorts. Beds are a little lumpy but hopefully you'll be sleepy enough not to notice. And then you can always jump-start the next day with that great coffee at the downstairs cafe.
