This harks back to the collegiate - if your educational days were this clean and tropical. Bursting with all the accoutrements of an upscale, well-appointed guesthouse, it deserves to be more expensive but for the shared bathroom.Fresh and inspired, this isn't what one envisions when thinking 'budget'. For Kaua'i, however, what a deal! It's full of lush surroundings, pastures and mountains, and although Wailua isn't beachfront, its certainly tropical. Nearby waterfalls, kayaking spots and hikes abound and some of the best snorkeling reefs, windsurfing and surf breaks and coastal pathways are just a few miles away. Though you're not on the beach, this inland meringue-yellow country getaway boasts three 'hostel' bunkrooms with separate entrances and kitchenettes; and yes, actual bunk beds. A downside is the shared bathroom.

It's inland, lush and a tad reclusive, so best rent a bike and toddle around the hills of Wailua; continue a few miles and ride along the coastal bike path of Kapa'a where you can grab some coffee, island fruit and ocean views.
