These are très lavish digs, where even the cheapest room radiates a regal-but-subdued flair, and rock stars reserve a floor of their own. Marble bathrooms, well-appointed rooms and a smattering of restaurants, galleries and shops make this beachfront high-end resort of resorts a classic.

The Grand Hyatt set the standard and for decades other high-end resorts have been playing catch up. Touches include marble-floor bathrooms, plush his-and-hers robes and, of course, iPod stations. The ample in-house restaurant options include a library-bar poolhouse with sushi, Highballs aplenty and sweeping ocean views. If that's not your cup of tea, choose from several other themed four- and five-star restaurants. The resort grounds are no less impressive, with the Jack Nicklaus-designed, PGA Grand Slam golf course, orchid-garden pool rivalling a river's length, and a separate, saltwater lagoon with man-made islands.
