You'll be struck by the lavishness of this place as soon as you step into the lobby atrium with its orchids, palm trees and extravagant artwork. But don't think that makes it highbrow - the Hyatt's fun and family friendly. This is one high-end resort that doesn't leave the kids behind. Even the art collections include kid-cool exhibits like antique toys and wild-looking war masks. Then there's the gardens of exotic wildlife full of curious penguins and chatty parrots. But the top thrills are in the grand pools, swim-through grottos and lava tube water slides that could make a kid grow fins. For the grown-ups there's a swim-up bar serving umbrella-topped tropical drinks. On the down side, you just might have to hang at the bar since the meager supply of poolside lounge chairs typically get claimed before breakfast and stay that way all day.

At sunset the Ka'anapali Beach Walk, which begins at the Hyatt and runs for a mile along Ka'anapali Beach, lights up with hula shows and other seaside entertainment. For the most atmospheric dining on the beach stop at Longboards, order the coconut shrimp and soak up the surf scene.
