The popular, central Howard Johnson Plaza wins admirers for its great value and excellent positioning just off East Nanjing Rd, Shànghai's most famous shopping thoroughfare.

With so much light flooding into the lobby through the glass walls you would imagine real palm trees (rather than the fake ones supplied) would have a chance of survival. But the frigid air-con would certainly finish them off. At the casual end of smart, you wouldn't necessarily impress your rich aunt bringing her to this 27-storey hotel, but the sense of ease is instantly welcoming. Fully-equipped rooms - many with East Nanjing Rd views - are comfortable but not that large, with welcome touches such as hairdryers in the bathroom and broadband. Opened in 2003, the hotel remains fresh and bright with discounts bringing doubles down a very attractive 50%. The location, sandwiched between People's Square and the Bund, is superb. Restaurants at the hotel are not recommended, but there's a splendid range in the vicinity.
