Set in a grand Italianate mansion on a hill above the city, the YHA gives budget travellers a glimpse of Bath splendour with its high ceilings, moulded plasterwork, giant windows and stone staircases. Unfortunately, it's bunks rather than four-posters in the dorms, but what can you expect for just over a tenner?Although it's a short uphill hike from town, regular buses and cheap taxis mean that it's well worth forgoing a central location for the stately surroundings of the YHA. The grand proportions of the building lend it an air of grace that's missing from other hostels in town and the large garden has magnificent views over the city. The dorms are basic and a bit cramped, with more beds than necessary squashed in, but most are en suite and by comparison the common areas are dripping with character. For the best combination ask for a bed in the 'lodge', a newer annexe with refurbished rooms and brand new bathrooms. The cafe serves a good selection of reasonably priced food, there's a full bar open in the evenings, coin-operated Internet access, laundry, on-street parking and bike hire. Although the hostel has 125 beds you should book well in advance in summer.
