Despite the decoy of the decorative arch, it's no oil painting from the outside, but signature restaurants, an impressive arcade and personable staff hoist the Peninsula Beijing into the top ranks. It's hard keeping pace with this hotel's name changes, the white-tile exterior was a bad choice and the lobby is a bit cumbersome, but the unflinchingly high standards of the Peninsula Beijing make it one of the city's top hotels. The well-dressed rooms with their huge plasma TVs are elegant indeed, but perhaps not outstanding. Dining however is first-rate, from trendy Jing - announced by a cascade of glass beads from the lobby - to dim sum in the Beijing courtyard-styled Huang Ting. And of course there's the location. Set off Beijing's premiere shopping street and close to some major attractions, you could find yourself walking everywhere you want to go.
