The Driskill opened its doors in 1886, two years before the current capital building was completed. Here Texas history and memorabilia co-exist with lavish style. Gold-leafed columns and stained-glass domes share a roof with western art and cow-hide sofas. Founder, cattle baron Colonel Driskill would be proud.

Bill and Hillary have stayed here. So have George W and Laura. Today's Governor's Suite was even President Lyndon Johnson and Lady Bird's private domain during his presidency. Walking down the dimly-lit corridors overloaded with art, you may feel a bit like you're in a museum. But sumptuous suites can be quite airy. The Bridal Renaissance - in whites, creams and beiges - has a truly grand marble bath. Great 6th St balcony, too. Tall ceilings make up for tiny bathrooms throughout standard 'historic' rooms. Period reproductions and larger baths characterise the 'traditional' rooms, in the 1929 wing. Peer into the pastry kitchen as you eat at the old fashioned bakery. Or dine in the darkly elegant grill for something more formal. Despite the grandeur, the hotel is fabulously hospitable. Milk and cookies or peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches are served nightly in the lobby.
