Address: Yafet.Hamra , Beirut 113-5304, Lebanon Show on map
A Hamra institution, this hotel was a popular postwar hang-out for journalists. Today it's a comfortable, old-fashioned hotel, with spotlessly clean rooms and excellent service - with the added bonus of a (tiny) hotel pool on the roof.It would be easy to dismiss this hotel as a relic of a Beirut that ceased to exist a few decades ago. But this hotel manages to pull off faded charm with barely a hitch. It's a welcoming address, with a very kitsch but cosy English-style sitting room to chill-out in and write those postcards. The rooms themselves are extremely comfortable, with decor to make a grandmother swoon. The best rooms are the suites with a large sitting area and double balcony. Perhaps as a tribute to the journalists who have stayed here, the mini-bar is one of the best in Beirut, with bottles of Lebanese wine and arak. Back downstairs, the walls of the legendary Duke of Wellington bar are adorned with deer heads, bagpipes and other British regalia - well worth dropping in for a dram.

If you can drag yourself away from the Duke of Wellington, the area around the hotel is filled with cafes where students work, flirt, and sometimes tap away at their laptops. Food-wise, Casablanca, down towards the Corniche is a great brunch spot and Al-Kahwa on Rue Bliss is excellent for some sheesha.
