Beirut's most prestigious pre-civil war hotel has recently been redeveloped in glitzy style. It glistens with acres of marble and boasts every amenity the moneyed set it attracts could wish for - including both indoor and outdoor pools.

This mammoth hotel is a landmark in Beirut. While much of the hotel's status is based on its prewar prowess, the offerings here for both business and pleasure travellers are formidable. While security levels here are a reminder of the hotel's proximity to where former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri was assassinated, once inside, the hotel's public areas offer some of the best people-watching in Beirut. Rooms fall on the opulent side of luxurious, and from standard rooms upwards they're very plush and comfortable in an old-fashioned way. While it has recently been renovated, the hotel retains its connection to a bygone era - perhaps something that returning businessmen and expat Lebanese are looking for when visiting Beirut.
