While the renovation of this Beirut institution didn't go far enough to really make this something special, the groovy foyer, great food outlets, and Hamra location help overcome the haphazardly revamped rooms.

Renovated in 2005, the hotel's swanky lobby, with its subtle lighting, dark wood, and contemporary furniture is a great place to hang out and check your email (on wi-fi). Cucina restaurant is also particularly stylish in a contemporary Italian brasserie style - red velvet curtains and lamps, polished wooden floors, and pasta under the glass table tops. Once upstairs, however, the rooms don't live up to the promises made by the foyer and food outlets. The hotel has suffered from a renovation that is rough around the edges (not at all to the usual standard of a Meridien hotel) and while the rooms are spacious, they are quite bland in comparison to the public areas downstairs.
