Sure, some hostels are grungy, rowdy or hippie havens. But this immaculate gem would suit any no-frills traveler seeking the basics. Perfectly situated downtown (and walkable to almost everything), it lets you ditch you car while exploring Hilo town.Set in a 1913 historic building with hardwood floors and 13ft (3.9m) ceilings, the hostel is refreshingly airy, thanks to trade winds from its namesake, Hilo Bay (visible from the eastern windows). Restrooms are remarkably sparkling, while the kitchen is so well equipped that you could cook Thanksgiving dinner here. Nothing is fancy, but such humbleness does match the retro vibe. Don't expect a party scene (or any scene whatsoever), but rather a friendly, diverse, mixed crowd. Youth sports or hula groups often stay here, as do Elderhostellers. Staffers are friendly but rule-sticklers; after the 11:00 check-out time, you absolutely must leave the premises! The only con? No wi-fi, although computers are available (5.00 per hour).
