If you crave a luxury splurge but can't justify the extravagance, choose this eco-conscious, culturally sensitive resort. Built in the early 1980s, Mauna Lani is among the Gold Coast pioneers, but its airy architecture remains fresh and still respectfully blends into the environment.Among Hawai?i's luxury resorts, Mauna Lani ranks among the finest, but it's certainly not the most chichi and exclusive. That's actually an advantage. There's a welcoming, unpretentious attitude at this Hawaiian-themed resort (and that's genuine Hawaiian, not ticky-tacky touristy Hawaiian). They even keep a cultural historian and practicing kahu (minister) on staff. The meticulously groomed grounds, with hundreds of towering coconut palms, are inviting rather than purely decorative. You won't feel intrusive strolling to historic sites, including working fishponds and a coastal trail. Renovated in the mid-1990s, the 342 rooms are modern and average a comfy 550 sq ft in size; an impressive 90% boast an ocean view. Honored as one of the 'World's Top Earth-Friendly Getaways' by Condé Nast Traveller in January 2008, Mauna Lani generates the most solar-electric power of any luxury resort in the world.

On site, indulge in a massage or facial at the Mauna Lani Spa, 40,000 sq ft of indoor/outdoor space teeming with fragrant tropical flora, a lava-rock sauna and calm pools for water therapy. Take a picnic lunch to Holoholokai Beach Park just north. It's too rough for swimming but a short path from the beach leads to ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs carved in lava rock.
