There's no more prominent piece of architecture in Kailua than the Royal Kona Resort's three oceanfront towers. The place is popular with package tours, and the lobby relentlessly reminds guests that this is Hawaii with loud piped-in music, lava rock everywhere and gaudy ocean-themed bathrooms.

Huge Easter Island heads overlook the restaurant, which is straight out of the '70s. Guests can enjoy excellent, spacious rooms and a saltwater lagoon. Kids stay and eat for free.
