One of Bergen's grandest old hotels, the Grand Hotel Terminus has historically been the hotel of choice for the city's well-heeled visitors. Until a planned (if as-yet ill-defined) overhaul changes the hotel forever, the lavish 1920s-era public areas will catch your eye. The rooms are more understated, although most are luxurious.Bergen has made an art form of adapting long-held traditions to the demands of the modern world and the new owners of this fine old hotel seem to be following suit. The whisky bar is perfectly at home in this refined old building, while the well-equipped gymnasium hosts the latest exercise equipment. Some style changes are in order: some of the rooms are small, soulless and in need of a new aesthetic, but others are ornate and spacious and best left alone. Award-winning interior designers have their eyes on the public spaces which, in their current manifestation, are either time-worn or priceless wood-panelled museum pieces. Whatever the result of its makeover, this fine old hotel will remain a quiet Bergen landmark ideal for those arriving and departing by train.

If staying in a hotel that is itself a work of art whets your appetite for the finer things in life, a five-minute walk northwest of the hotel takes you to the Bergen Art Museum on the shores of the lake Lille Lungegårdsvann. Here you'll find masterworks by Munch, Miró, Picasso, Kandinsky and Paul Klee, a collection that bolsters Bergen's claims of being one of northern Europe's cultural capitals.
