A block back from the waterfront and with elegant hardwood floors, First Hotel Marin has a maritime theme and a great location. Some rooms have harbour views and there's a touch of class here that's sometimes lacking in the chain hotels.Every time we've visited here, even in the peak summer season, we've left with the impression that the staff will go out of their way to make your stay a pleasant one. Another plus is the location - step outside your door and within minutes on foot you can be in the Torget fish market or amid the Unesco World Heritage-listed timber buildings of Bryggen. The rooms are spacious and stylish, and despite being in the heart of Bergen's most popular quarter, tranquil. Those with harbour views are really something special. The buffet breakfast is generous and a wonderful way to start your day.

Exploring Bryggen is easy from this wonderfully sited hotel. Lurking within Bryggen's ramshackle lanes is some marvellous shopping that could only be found in Bergen. Juhl's Silver Gallery has jewellery inspired by the Arctic North, Kvams Flisespikkeri has Bryggen-inspired artworks by Ketil Kvam, while Læverkstedet does a roaring trade in moose leather.
