Address: Bezanijska 3 , Belgrade 11080, Serbia
A real surprise for Belgrade, this is a mid-range hotel that's homely, welcoming, comfortably equipped and not the least bit corporate. The Zemun location means it's a longish bus or taxi ride from the centre, but it is close to all the period cottages, churches and markets of Zemun's pretty historic centre. If you want to stay somewhere that doesn't feel like a business hotel and won't devestate your pocket, you could do far worse than the intimate little Skala, as long as you don't mind being a fair way out of the centre. The large rooms are cheerfully decorated in green and lemon yellow and come equipped with air-con, TV, telephone and minibar. Downstairs below the light-filled atrium there's a decent brick-arched restaurant serving some rich fare including Chateaubriand, caviar and traditional Serbian dishes plus plenty of fish. The Zemun location is ideal if you want to explore the Danube's plane-tree-lined south bank and is also reasonably handy for the airport (proximity to the airport-bound freeway means you miss most of the traffic scrum around the Sava bridges and the city centre).

Cross Zemun's busy main road and head up to the Millennium Tower (built by the Hungarians in 1896 to celebrate their empire's 1,000th year) for dramatic views across to Belgrade, then take the road down to the old town past the historic little cottages, through the charming open-air market and down to the riverside restaurants and cafes for refreshment.
