The Bleibtreu flaunts an edgy, urban feel tempered by the warmth of Italian design and the ample use of natural materials. Subtlety is king here. In fact, from the street it doesn't even look like a hotel, tucked away as it is behind a flower shop, a bar and a deli that are often swarmed by clued-in neighbours.

On a pretty side street of the Ku'damm shopping boulevard, the Bleibtreu was among Berlin's first boutique hotels. It also pioneered what might be termed an 'ecologically correct' design approach where the main focus is creating a tranquil and healthful ambience. Inside awaits an aesthetic composition of furniture made from untreated oak, carpets woven from 100% virgin wool and walls daubed with organic paint. Rooms won't fit a ton of luggage but feature a bevy of unusual touches. Coral-coloured Jasper stone handles open the closet and the minibar, which is stocked with complimentary soft drinks, beer and water. A fancy lighting system controlled by remote lets you match the lighting level to your mood. The bathrooms are bliss-out spots with extra-deep Japanese-style tubs. Or enhance your visit even further with a trip to the swank subterranean spa. Think soothing…
