Berlin's most high-profile defender of grand tradition has been a celebrity magnet ever since first opening its portals in 1907. Faithfully rebuilt after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it again woos presidents, diplomats, stars and the merely rich with front-row vistas of the Brandenburg Gate, top-notch rooms and off-the-chart service.

The rooms and suites, drenched in a palette of rich blues, reds and greens, drip opulence without ever being in danger of becoming too fussy or over-decorated. The public areas, though, clearly seek to impress, starting with the grand lobby-lounge with its elephant fountain and stained-glass dome framed in 24-karat gold. Sipping coffee while watching the world on parade will make you feel like a bit player in that classic old movie Grand Hotel (which, incidentally, was inspired by the Adlon). Personal service is key here: staff will walk your poodle, outfit your room with a Mecca-facing prayer mat or deliver a stationary bike so you can exercise in privacy instead of in the fancy Roman-themed health and fitness spa. And if hunger strikes, you'll have not one but three restaurants to feed those cravings.
