Late-19th-century glamour meets new-millennium comfort in this sophisticated hotel on a quiet side street within a hop, skip and jump of the fun-filled Scheunenviertel and other blockbuster sights. The 1887 building, a former fur atelier, brims with such beautiful period details as a well-worn mosaic floor and a floating stairway adorned with floral stucco.

A small exhibit in the entranceway provides a brief chronicle of the house and Rosenstrasse itself, which carved out its spot in history for being the site of a famous women's protest against the Nazi regime in 1943. Cap your sightseeing day with a drink in the stylish little lounge-bar before retiring to rooms that wear a thoroughly streamlined look accented by Vitra chairs, Tolomeo lamps and fresh colours ranging from vanilla to teal. Rooms overlooking the courtyard are quieter, but if you want more of a typical Berlin view, book one facing the historic quarter. Most rooms are generously sized, with desks, good closet space and extra-spacious showers. Breakfast is served in the glass-covered Wintergarten anchored by a sandstone sculpture hewn by the same artist who created the nearby memorial to the women of Rosenstrasse.
