This refined boutique hotel wears its 'art' moniker with a justified swagger: more than 400 abstract works by renowned contemporary German artist Georg Baselitz decorate its striking lobby, hallways and rooms. Fans of cutting-edge Italian furniture will also be happy here, especially in the suites with their extra-cool bathrooms.

It's the only place we know of where even the carpets are a symphony of the practical and the arty, featuring, as they do, a clever quote by Aristotle woven ad infinitum into the thick, sound-absorbing wool. The sleekest suites are on the 6th floor and have small balconies perfect for pondering the day's events while taking in a panorama encompassing the medieval St Mary's Church and the space-age TV Tower. The hotel itself occupies an historic spot near Berlin's 14th-century birthplace. Although the address isn't particularly trendy, it's quiet and you'll still be within walking distance of most places that matter. If you don't feel like heading out, enjoy a light meal or a drink at the Andy Warhol-inspired restaurant called The Factory. The hotel also caters particularly well for nonsmokers (smoking is permitted only on one of the six floors) and for people with disabilities.
