This cocoon of quiet sophistication, right on graceful Gendarmenmarkt, has the character of a small boutique hotel, yet the amenities of a grand 'hotel de luxe'. After a day of turf pounding, relax in the stress-melting spa before retiring to your stylish room, which, like the rest of the place, is a sensory interplay of marble, glass and light.

Views from many of the rooms are simply stunning, especially those on the upper floors which almost put you at eye level with the ornate domed tower of the French Cathedral. If possible, snag one with a balcony, perfect for kicking off the day with an alfresco breakfast or winding things down with a nightcap. And speaking of breakfast, you better bring a grumbling tummy to this one so you can max out on such delicacies as fresh-cut fruit, finger-sized shrimp, wafer-thin lox and eggs prepared any which way you like. Waist watchers can later work off the carbs in the fitness room, although the stress-melting steam bath, sauna and esoteric colour therapy room might beckon more after a day of urban turf pounding.
