It takes guts to create a hotel that looks and feels like an English country retreat right in the heart of the Scheunenviertel, Berlin's buzziest nightlife zone. But it can be done, as proven by this charmer featuring traditional rooms paired with hi-tech touches such as heated bathroom floors. Get one facing the courtyard to cut down on the noise level.

Rooms are sheathed in pleasing blue, cream and red tones, but still manage to avoid that overly floral Laura Ashley look. If you like to sleep with the windows open, pick a room facing the cute, ivy-covered courtyard, as noisy crowds and screeching trams might otherwise keep you from catching your zzzz's. For a little extra help with fighting a hangover, hop into the shower whose strong massage nozzles should pummel you back from the bleary-eyed brink. For breakfast you can pick between the Art Deco-inspired smoking room or the bright and airy nonsmoking room, a rarity in smoke-infested Berlin. A small staircase leads down to the small, softly lit 24-hour bar, although you'll have plenty more within staggering distance. For those wishing to arrive in grand style, the hotel can arrange for limousine pick-up service at the airport or train station at a rate no higher than a cab tab.
