After an extreme make-over, this high-rise GDR-era hotel has been reincarnated as the Park Inn and flaunts its rejuvenated look with pride. The hulking tower with over 1000 rooms stands sentinel over bustling Alexanderplatz, putting you within a stone's throw of blockbuster sights and the wildly popular Scheunenviertel district.

Despite improvements to the facade, this place may not wow you from the outside, but once you've stepped into the busy lobby you realise that there's no need to worry. Rooms are snug but handsomely appointed in soothing earth tones and sport state-of-the-art touches: flat-screen TVs, heated bathroom floors and noiseless air-con more typically found in pricier properties. Some rooms have a glass-enclosed tub right in the middle of the room - fine if you're travelling with your sweetheart, but maybe not so hot if you've got your parents in tow. Views are predictably fabulous, especially above the 20th floor; try snagging one facing the TV Tower for awesome sunsets. You really get quite a lot for your money here, given the central location and full range of facilities, including a gym, sauna and top-floor casino.
