Opposites attract: the timeworn adage certainly rings true in this ritzy abode. In a feat of stylistic alchemy, it smoothly blends Prussian elegance with Italian dolce vita, Zen influences and edgy 1920s Bauhaus. People with a passion for design may find it hard to tear themselves away from this extraordinary place, where every detail speaks of refinement.

A great deal of vision and dedication has been channelled into turning this former turn-of-the-20th-century town house into an intimate grand hotel. On a leafy side street, not far from bustling Kurfürstendamm, it's a stylish hideaway where time seems to move just a little bit slower than in the rest of Berlin. At its heart is the Quadriga Lounge, a glass-tented indoor piazza wrapped around an enchanting petite garden. This is where days start with an exquisite à la carte breakfast and perhaps end with a cognac in the bar. Off to the side, the Michelin-starred restaurant regales hotel guests and local foodies with classic, gimmick-free culinary compositions and a phenomenal wine list. Rooms and suites are airy and spacious, and filled with classic Bauhaus furniture. The personal welcome note, fruit and baked treat are nice touches.
