Lonely Planet review

No grand marquee, only a small, discreet logo and a liveried doorman reveal that you've arrived at one of Berlin's newest temples of luxury. In an ambience of effortless sophistication, you'll find all the trappings of a big-league player. This includes a delightful French brasserie, a luxurious spa, and a clubby bar with 400 types of schnapps.

Entering the hushed and elegant lobby with its sweeping staircase feels like a retreat from the in-your-face modernity of your immediate surrounds. Polished cherry wood, cream-and-black marble, shiny brass and lushly upholstered furnishings combine to create an atmosphere of effortless sophistication. You'll find all the trappings of a big-league player, which could easily keep you busy for an entire day. Not to be missed is a session in the spa where fatigue fades quickly in the jacuzzi or during an expert massage. If you prefer luxuriating in privacy, have the Bade-Butler draw you an aromatherapy bath, complete with rose petals and a glass of chilled champagne. For sustenance, there's classic afternoon tea and two restaurants, serving gourmet fare. Come dark, the bar is the place to ferret out your favourite from a mind-boggling array of 400 types of fruit schnapps. Cheers!
