Writer Thomas Mann called it 'charming and cosy' while Talking Head's David Byrne loved it for being 'friendly and helpful'. In business since 1929, there's something comfortably stuffy about this intimate hotel with its cosy cigar bar and jazzy restaurant. Rooms exude a lived-in feel while sporting the mod-cons you'd expect from a hotel of this pedigree. There's something comfortably stuffy about this intimate grand hotel on a ritzy side street near Zoo station. You can almost picture dapper gents in bowler hats escorting ladies in heels and flapper dresses through the grand lobby. The cosy cigar bar, with walk-in humidor and rich wood panelling, has been a haven of the testosterone crowd since the '50s. One look at the restaurant, though, will snap you back into the 21st century. No longer a place of hushed conversation, it now sparkles in jazzy red and gold, even if the original crystal chandeliers still set historic accents. The 125 rooms and suites also keep alive an aura of yesteryear and have a pleasant lived-in feel. (Just remember, Greta Garbo might have stayed in your suite.) Of course, all sport the gamut of mod cons you'd come to expect from a hotel of this pedigree.

Catch a flick at the historic Delphi Filmpalast across the street or head next door for smooth tunes at Quasimodo, a subterranean jazz club. If you're hungry, the hotel's two-course business lunch, including a soft drink and coffee, is excellent value.
The Delphi Filmpalast across the street was a hugely popular dance hall in the '30s and '40s. Badly damaged during WWII, it reopened as one of Berlin's first postwar cinemas in 1949.
