Central, reasonably priced and pretty sleek, the Hyatt has tried hard to distinguish itself from Birmingham's other chains with a blend of classical elegance and contemporary style. The swish designer rooms, tasteful artworks and giant windows make it a cut above the competition in this price bracket.

Walking in through the impressive, light-filled atrium at the Hyatt it's hard to tell what to expect. There's a strange mix of classic hotel stuffiness, water features and Roman pillars battling it out against modern trendiness and contemporary art works. Upstairs though, things get much better. A firm commitment to modern chic has been made in the bedrooms with contemporary design and styling throughout. Subtle, neutral colours combine with modern, minimalist furniture, lush fabrics and trendy bathrooms to give an impression of restrained luxury. There are all the usual extras such as broadband access, interactive TV and a safe but for real indulgence you've got to opt for the Chamberlain suite with its panoramic views, king-size canopy bed, sauna and baby grand piano.
