It's big, it's a brand and it's aimed at business travellers, but the City Inn consistently gets top marks for service and staffing and goes that little extra mile to make sure your stay is comfortable. As generic hotel chains go, it's the top dog in Birmingham.

Although you won't be wowed by funky design or quirky touches at the City Inn, you will get a good deal on a crisp, modern room right in the heart of the city. Floor-to-ceiling windows bathe the contemporary rooms in light and the decor is simple and stylish. You'll get a firm, queen-size bed with oversized duvet, a flat-screen TV, and DVD and CD players so you can happily relax for the evening if you can't be bothered going out on the town. Bathrobes and a 'pillow library' (two hard and two soft pillows) help create a sense of luxury and although the bathrooms are compact they've got excellent power showers. Downstairs there's a clean-cut bar and award-winning restaurant with an alfresco terrace and live jazz at weekends. It's hardly brimming with character but you can't argue with the service at this price.
