It's definitely no statement in style, but the small, simple Hôtel Choiseul offers impressively clean and often very spacious rooms at extremely reasonable rates, particularly for this popular part of town.

From the hotel, you're only a short stroll to the highlights of central Bordeaux, including museums, parks and the Cathèdrale St-André, as well as lively café-lined squares and shopping precincts. You can also rent bikes here for a low half-day or daily rate. All 15 uncluttered rooms, even the bathroom-less singles, have high ceilings, TVs and telephones. Some of the old-fashioned furniture is actually quite cool, like the vintage 1950s/1960s angular wardrobes. Balconies open off three of the street-facing rooms. You're given a key to the building's front door to gain access when reception's closed. It's no surprise that there's no lift at this budget spot, so you're confined to climbing the stairs - but at this price you could definitely do worse.
