Geneva's oldest hotel lives up to its magnificent heritage. Chandelier-lit moulded ceilings, grandiose flower arrangements, original oils in heavy gold frames and diamonds glittering behind glass is what this lakeside neoclassical gem from 1834 is all about.

Saudi billionaire Prince Al-Walid bin Talal bin Abdulaziz al-Saud (the chap also behind Paris' George V) might own the walls but the Swiss-slick management of this five-star oasis is down to the Four Seasons luxury hotel chain. German merchant Hans Kleberger (1486-1545) gave the palace its name and in 1834, a decade after the first steamboat rolled into Geneva, it became a hotel. Furnishings remain wholly period; colour schemes reflect the slate blue, grey and green hues of the lake; and on a clear day suite guests wake up to Mont Blanc peeping in across the water. The exquisite oval-shaped staircase - view it from the 5th floor - is a classified historical monument and the Tuscan truffle-studded risotto served in the des Bergues restaurant, Il Lago, is a legend in itself.
