It was ridiculed for years as Geneva's ugly duckling, albeit a duckling with five stars and a Noga Hilton label. But since the Kempinski luxury hoteliers got their hands on it, the place has soared in the style stakes.

Ode to design is what this eight-storey, 1980s block screams. A mirage of glistening glass balconies and reflective windows, the freshly gutted interior is a slick mix of contemporary furnishings and soft grey and slate-blue lake-inspired hues. Something of a one-stop shop, the vast low-ceilinged lobby doubles as boutique shopping mall, while a theatre and nightclub rock the basement. But it is Floor 2 where the real action is: Watch the city's iconic Jet d'Eau gush sky-high in Le Lounge; hang out over breakfast, coffee or lunch on teak decking in Le Grill; or sip cocktails with a hip pre-clubbing set in Le Bar. Apart suites have their own private lift for bodyguards - ensure your PA briefs the hotel on what flowers, chocolates, art works and books you like prior to arrival.
