Built in 1988, this plush pad is definitely dated (though they're continually upgrading the decor, including new regal red carpet). Even so, its outstanding service makes it popular with visiting film stars, and even noncelebs are made to feel important here. The Burdigala sits on the edge of Meriadeck, Bordeaux's ultramodern business district, and across the street from its bunker-like shopping centre. But don't be put off by the slightly sterile location. The historic centre is only a hop, skip and a jump away, and the hotel provides everything you'd expect from a four-star establishment, including jacuzzis and multijet showers in the higher-end rooms. Four rooms are fully wheelchair accessible. If you're travelling with youngsters in tow, the mezzanine family suites (aka 'duplex rooms') are ideal. They come with lower-level living areas equipped with fold-down king-size beds, and either king or twin beds upstairs, as well as a second toilet (and a second TV set to circumvent fights over the remote!). Business travellers will appreciate the free high-speed internet in all rooms, plus the free online computer and colour printer in the lobby.

Dining is prime at the hotel's restaurant, Le Jardin de Burdigala (which, despite its name, is indoors). Beneath the domed glass atrium set around a dramatic sculpture, two- or three-course meals are available and there's an à la carte menu specialising in seafood. An American-style buffet breakfast is also served here.
Burdigala was the Roman name given to the Bordeaux area when Rome colonised the Aquitaine region in 56 BC.
