Four-star Hotel Schlossberg has a location other hoteliers would die for - at the foot of Graz's green Schlossberg and just a short walk from the heart of town. This hotel is small enough to offer personal service, and the rooftop terrace is perfect for an evening glass of wine.Schlossberg is traditional without falling into the trap of adhering slavishly to the past. Antique furnishings adorn the foyer, and the Biedermeier style can definitely be flagrant and overdone in some rooms, but your eye will soon be caught by the modern, original oil paintings throughout the hotel. It pulls off this double act of rural estate living and modern facilities surprisingly well. Rooms are tastefully furnished, have their own period writing desk, and the quieter ones, which are away from a main street serviced by trams, face a courtyard. The higher you climb the better this gets: reach the rooftop swimming pool and terrace and you arrive at wonderful views over the rooftops of Graz. Back down to Earth, it has a rather dingy fitness room with exposed air-conditioning pipes, but the sauna area with a glass-walled steam bath is pleasant enough.

Rising to 473m (1551ft), Schlossberg is the site of the original fortress that gave Graz its name. Head up there either by foot, in the ultra-modern glass lift or take the funicular railway. From the Garrison Museum you get Graz's best view, and up here too is the clock tower, spared from destruction by Napoleon during the 1809 invasion when the townsfolk coughed up a ransom.
