Having undergone a recent facelift, the Grand Ashok is looking grander than ever. Part of a small chain of luxury hotels, it has opted for a more contemporary look with a hint of understated Balinese style rather than Mughal-esque flourishes.

Acres of polished marble gleam in the lobby, from where the efficient and affable staff will guide you to your room in one of the hotel's two wings. The renovated rooms are in a palette of browns, reds, greens and gold, and have wooden floors. Their facilities are generous and include such practicalities as a kettle, iron and board. Floor to ceiling windows flood rooms with light and there are balconies overlooking the hotel's spacious grounds, which include a good-sized outdoor pool. The grounds are also home to a monument which marks the spot where Mahatma Gandhi once gave a public audience. Don't miss the fashionable Rejuve spa, with its gym and a full menu of therapies and beauty treatments. A great deal is the Sunday brunch package including a massage as well as a hearty spread with free-flowing champagne or beer. Cheers!
