Binders is dull on the outside and delightful on the inside, with chirpy staff and individually designed rooms stretching from bold to minimalist. A modern bar with free internet access and a whirlpool add to its appeal.

At first, Binders hardly bowls you over with its nondescript façade. Step inside, however, and the picture changes. The affable owner has poured love and labour into revamping the hotel; the bar with free internet access and sunny terrace are a taste of good things to come. A glass elevator whizzes up to rooms designed with a razor-sharp eye for detail. They range from budget digs in sweet-shop shades to minimalist pads where chalk-white walls complement teak floors. The glam bathrooms feature slate floors and frosted glass screens. Wi-fi, fax and internet TV come standard. For the ultimate splurge, check out the beamed loft suite with a waterbed that screams 'bounce on me'. Throw in a gym, whirlpool and a docile Bernese mountain dog called Cindy and, hey presto, here's a fabulous hotel that doesn't cost the earth.
