Planning a romantic weekend away? Flock to this little love nest near the Hofburg. Swarovski, Versace and Philippe Starck have all put their creative stamp on this gorgeous hotel. Expect plush rooms that shine with crystals and a dazzling spa.

Imagine what a design diva would do with a bulging bank balance. Sonja Ultsch invested it wisely in Schwarzer Adler - a temple for the pampered, but without a whisker of kitsch. The attention to detail is there from reception, where a bejewelled eagle sparkles and a fountain spouts mineral water. Rooms are spectacularly bling; even standards have bathrooms glittering with Swarovski crystals. Upgrade and you can snooze in a solid marble bed beneath black satin sheets in the Versace Suite, or curl up on a Persian rug beside the fire in the Kaiser Maximillian Suite. The spa is equally stunning with its crystalline saunas, whirlpools and waterfalls. Romantic? Yes. But not in the traditional sense. If hotels were people, this one would give Marilyn a run for her money.
