This art-driven hotel is seriously funky. From the outside, it's cunningly disguised as an original twin-set of beautiful 14th-century half-timbered cottages. Inside, 30 rooms slumber above a trio of heaving eating and drinking venues.

Given the endearingly bohemian service - reception is invariably unmanned when you pass by - the price tag might appear high. But peek at a room and you'll get the gist. Each is individually designed in a different style - urban, rustic, romantic etc. The best in the house is room 164 - it sits beneath the eaves, has two glass walls and the most delightful rooftop terrace framed with terracotta flower pots, a table and a couple of chairs to while away warm days. Its bathroom, one of a kind, is a tiled work of art by Brigitte Steinamann (view other works by the Swiss ceramist at her studio in Lucerne called Das Ding). Rebstock is in a busy pedestrian zone and is a hub of local life - locals drink and smoke in the Hofegge bar, trendies revel in free newspapers and breakfast all day (inside or out on pea-green chairs) at Wirtshaus, and those seeking more sophistication dine at Hofstube.
