Testimony to the fabulous part Lucerne has played in the development of Swiss tourism since the 19th century, this vast, luxurious palace on the waterfront is queen of the lake.

Its ginger façade interspersed with ornate wrought-iron balconies oozes belle époque style and is just adored by the Condé Nast set, darling. Inside, a red-carpeted catwalk of a corridor (lined with mirrors and oil paintings of chaps in wigs) creates an appropriate build-up for the sheer opulence to come. Marble columns, sparkling marble floors, humungous crystal chandeliers and period furnishings languish alongside contemporary treasures, and a luxury spa ensures a rounded sensory experience. Honeymooners note: the 'Private Spa Diamond Ritual' sounds rather nice - 5.5 hours in a private spa for two, encompassing lunch, a welcome foot ritual and lots of wallowing by candlelight in a tub sprinkled with flower petals. For Palace guests who need further assistance in working out what to do with themselves, a so-called 'Leisure Designer' is at your beck and call.
