One of Plovdiv's real gems, the Renaissance has an enviable location, set at the Old Town's southern edge, and also a five-minute walk from Ploshtad Stambolov. Its intricate and traditional hand-painted walls and handsome wood floors recreate the experience of being in a national revival-era mansion at its peak.Since each of the five rooms at this boutique hotel are uniquely decorated, they all have slightly different prices, the most lavish being the 'red room', with sumptuous fringed curtains and rich antique wood furnishings. All rooms are painted in soothing, soft base tones and feature ornate floral designs, and all have sparkling modern bathrooms. Good-natured English-speaking owner Dimitar Vassilev is a fount of local knowledge and always available to accommodate requests. Breakfast is included in the price, and is served in the restaurant, which also operates for lunch and dinner.

Walk out from the hotel and go straight, past the Ponedelnik Pazar fruit and vegetable market. Take the steps down into blvd Tsar Boris III Obedinitel underpass, and turn right into the Cultural Center Thrakart to marvel at its elaborate Roman villa floor mosaics and other ancient artefacts.
Several Ottoman-era property documents, some written in Arabic, were discovered in this old house when it was being renovated; ask owner Dimitar to show them to you.
