Set in a grand, recently restored city mansion block, the wonderfully named Splendid Hotel is a charming place with spacious rooms and top class service. The location makes a handy base for sightseeing too.

Located in an imposing neoclassical building dating back to 1910, the Splendid was thoughtfully renovated in 2004 and is today one of the city centre's finest hotels. The lemon-hued frontage is an instantly recognisable landmark, and the hotel is pervaded by an air of class and quiet refinement, from the liveried doorman at the entrance to the tastefully furnished rooms themselves. Some enjoy superb views overlooking the city's cathedral on the opposite side of the road. Reception is on the first floor, reached by a flight of steps, though the accommodation floors are served by a tiny lift which some may find a little claustrophobic.
