With its sterile bathrooms and spotless dorm rooms, the Envoy makes for a clean, comfortable and reasonably priced stay in central Yerevan. With reliable management and 24-hour reception, it really fits the bill if you want an efficient, cost effective base from which to explore the city. The Envoy is a mostly hassle-free, European-style hostel. Some of the eight-bed dorm rooms are partitioned into two rooms so it doesn't feel particularly crowded. Storage lockers are available and there is blissful air-con for use in summer (and a heater in winter). Bathrooms are likewise clean and modern. Small private rooms with bath and toilet are also available. Quad rooms, like the dorms, have separate shared toilet and shower facilities. The basement offers some public space with couches, tables, TV and computers for internet. The breakfast served here is basic; sliced bread, cheese, butter, jam and tea. Self-caterers can buy their own food at a local grocer and cook for themselves in the kitchen. Laptop users can access the wi-fi. While generally quiet, the Envoy can get busy with big groups that sometimes check into your dorm in the middle of the night.

Within crawling distance of the hostel, one can enjoy some fine live music at the Malkhas Jazz Club (tel: 53 17 78; 52 Pushkin Poghots). Owner-operator Levon Malkhasian is considered the Armenian Godfather of Jazz. He has an enormous collection of jazz music and supports young musicians by letting them rehearse in his club in the daylight hours - come early for a private jam session!
