This turn-of-the-20th-century Beaux Arts building, complete with fluted columns, copper cornices and cast-iron adornments, houses one of Boston's most exciting hotels. Filled with original artwork, period detailing and all the modern comforts that 21st-century guests expect, XV Beacon sets the tone for all other boutique properties in town.

Guest room decor is nothing less than utterly soothing and takes advantage of colour schemes rich with taupe, espresso and cream. You'll find custom-made gas fireplaces and built-in mahogany entertainment units; heated towel racks and rainforest shower heads in the bathrooms; canopy beds dressed in Frette linens; and iPod docking stations. If you're willing to leave this oasis, venture up to the rarefied roof deck, lush with plants and downtown views. Free in-town taxi service, along with 24-hour room service and complimentary health club privileges, are a few of the first-class trappings that guests can come to expect. The on-site Federalist restaurant ('The Fed') is filled with power brokers, splurging couples and wine aficionados. Beef Wellington and New England-style clam bakes reign in this traditional spot.
