Black-and-white movie stills, small checkerboard tiles in the bathroom, clubby leather chairs and sumptuous fabrics, Hotel Marrol's could be straight out of the 1940s silver screen era. It's hard to imagine more retro refinement packed into one cultural landmark of a building.

The bellman tugs at his white cotton gloves while he waits for a lanky brunette to remove her sun glasses in the soft entry hall light. He directs her to the discrete parlour desk where the manager welcomes the arriving guest by name. Could be the opening scene in a 1940s drama, or maybe it's just another day at Hotel Marrol's. Stay in the grand suite and a limousine will whisk from the airport and you'll be welcomed with a drink. In any room you can pop in a CD and relax until your appointment to sauna and soak at the Romanesque Jasmine Spa. A stay at this member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World might just be titled "The Art of Living." Only one word of warning: avoid the small 'ladies chamber' singles unless you like flowers - they're on the walls, covering the bedspread, in the bath salts...
