OK, so Koliba Hill is not the easiest place to get to, but this homely penzión's tranquility and family-run attention more than make up for the bus ride. You can even rent the couple's horses and go for a ride in the city forest.

From the hill above Bratislava's Old Town, you look down over vineyards (and new bazillion-koruna mansions) to the city. Twinkly night lights and surrounding greenery add to a feeling of residential calm at Zlatá Noha (Golden Legs). The name probably refers to the owners' three horses, but you never know their German shepherd might have been quite fleet in his day. Now he just sounds mean and acts nice. Single and double rooms come equipped all the essentials - wardrobe, platform bed, small satellite TV. Apartments have more mid-century modern style with sling-back chair seating areas. Wi-fi access is only available in some rooms. A cold buffet in the light-filled breakfast room/bar costs extra. Be warned: the steep driveway and many stairs wouldn't suit anyone mobility-impaired.
